World’s Smallest Barbie House – Mini Finds

While I was doing some shopping at our local Aldi’s I ran across a World’s Smallest Malibu Barbie House. I decided to pick two up, since they looked to be in scale for a Barbie and Barbie House in 1:12 scale. My though was that if they were I could leave one as is and see how hard it was to customize the other.

Once I got them home, I opened them up to see if my idea would work. The dolls themselves are exactly one inch tall and the dollhouse is four inches long, one and a half inches wide and three and a half inches tall. Which would make a perfect sized fashion doll and fashion doll dollhouse in 1:12 scale. The dollhouse comes with some cute stickers like a fashion doll dollhouse that you can use to decorate the dollhouse if you didn’t want to customize it. From the checklist it appears that the dollhouse comes in the white, yellow, and rust colored house as well as a multiple pink colored house. I was also able to find them for purchase online as well, if you don’t have an Aldi’s near you or yours doesn’t have them. Making this a great mini find.

Now onto the next part, can it be customized easily?

The thin card back easily pops off, which makes it a lot easier to access both the front and back of the dollhouse. I am hopeful that that will make customizing it easier. My plan is to use paint, wallpaper, and fabric to customize the dollhouse. In the coming weeks I am hoping to have it all fixed up and have another blog post about how it goes and how it turned out!!

Quick Update

For our first post back I’d thought I’d share with you an update on our etsy shop, for two reason… One who doesn’t love tiny cute things and two I have a coupon code you all the use in our shop till July 10th. To celebrate the coming summer and all the new items set to invade our shop feed!!

These past few months have been hectic, getting new items up to the shop and getting ready for the summer months, so many weeds needed weeding… So there hasn’t been much done on the dollhouses front, though we do have a new project to show you that we are starting soon that you’ll get to follow along with us as we work on it. I’ll leave it as a surprise for the next post what it is, but I will give you one hint… it’s red!

The shop has been getting more items. We’ve added lots of new pillows, afghans and bedding sets, in all different colors and styles. We have a couple one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture almost done and some limited run pieces on their way as well. We have also expanded out into 1:9 scale, and have added many model horse blankets and accessories. With lots more on the way, and some horse fun for 1:12 scale as well.

Dollhouses, Mid Century Modern (Beachside Bungalow), Updates

Beachside Bungalow: Mid Century House Update

It is the start of 2019 and one of our goals is to finish this house. We started a renovation last year but didn’t quite get it finished. We are giving ourselves a deadline this time, I hope this helps to get it finished!

Last year we did get quite alot done as you can see in some of the pictures; although at the moment it’s the catch all for everything imaginable. Had to take a picture of this mess! I think first thing is to clear out everything that doesn’t belong.

We had yet to decide what the two smaller rooms upstairs should be so that needs to be given some thought. I was thinking a small library or reading room, a sewing room, a nursery or a small bedroom. Decisions, Decisions.

We are staying with the mid-century decorating style so be sure to check back weekly to see what items we may find to create and share as we go along. We plan on finishing by April 30th, lets hope we can do it!

How To Fold & Organize Your Miniature Fabric Stash

I decided some organization needed to take place for all out fabric. I’m an avid sewer and have always had a huge stash of fabric but it has never overflowed my cabinet where it has been kept. When I started sewing in miniature our collection erupted! Every time we went into a craft or fabric store we came home with more. It seemed we are always finding the perfect cut and even though we only bought a 1/2 yard to 1 yard it began to overflow not only the cabinet but two large rubbermaid totes! The worst part is we can never find what is wanted for our latest project.

It was decided the clear plastic storage boxes would work the best. This allows you to see the fabric without having to take it all out. I used a 161/2″L X 13″W X 121/4″H plastic storage box for 1/2 yard and 1 yard cuts of fabric. After trying a couple ways of folding I found the best way to have it fit in the box; six stacks of neatly folded fabric, two rows, which can be seen easily. Each cut of fabric measures approximately 3 3/4 inch by 41/2 inch.

Here’s how I folded; this worked well up to 1 yard of fabric. First you make sure your salvages are together with cut ends on each side.

Fold the piece in half so both cut ends come together.

Next you fold the salvages towards the fold of the fabric.

At this point you will fold the fabric into thirds.

The last step is to fold the the fabric in half and then in half again.

And then you should have something like this.

I found this way of organizing our fabric worked out really well.

How To Do A Textured Drywall Wall In Dollhouse Scale

It’s been ages since I’ve gotten a chance to post something to the blog, summertime seems to make everything get busier. Any who, I finally got a chance to work on our in-progress house, and I wanted to show you how I made the statement wall in it. (Feel free to ask questions if you have them!!)

So on to the tutorial, of how to make a dollhouse textured drywall or plaster wall.

So to do this I used Spackling Compound, you could use something similar like joint compound, but Spackling Compound is lighter in texture so I went with that for the look I was going for.

You will also need a putty knife (or something stiff you can wipe off), sandpaper (I used 220), something to create the texture (I used an old wash cloth), paper towels (for clean up), wax paper or something similar (to protect your work surface), some paint primer (to prime and protect the wall and get it ready to add color), and some paint (if you want it colored).

To get started make sure your work surface is protected and get your putty knife and Spackling Compound out. To begin with I applied a thin layer of the compound and just made sure it covered the entire wall and let it dry. I then sanded the wall smooth, do be careful doing this since the dust isn’t real good for you to breath.

Once it was smoothed to my liking, and the dust vacuumed up, I went in applied another coat of the compound. I made it a hair thicker than last time so that the texture had a better chance of showing and imprinting in deeper. So once I had as even a layer as I could get I took the washcloth and started dabbing it on the wet wall till I got a result I liked. Like I said you can use almost anything to texture, it just depends on the look you want it the end. This is the texture of the wash cloth I used if you where curious.

Now I did lightly sand the wall again after I textured to knock of any really high points, and to bring it all together as a whole wall but that is entirely up to the person doing it and how it looks to you. Here it is before I sanded…

Now once its to where you want it to look you go in and add primer to it. The primer will help protect the primer from getting dirty and from moisture, it also will get it ready for painting so it doesn’t “eat” your paint.
